The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has announced a new process for CDL applicants who are adding or renewing a hazmat endorsement on their license. At the request of MMTA and its Board members that haul hazmat, as of February 16, 2025, the MVA began migrating the renewal period from an 8-year term to a 5-year term for drivers who are adding or renewing the hazmat endorsement. As a result, the MVA will no longer print the hazmat expiration date on the back of a driver’s CDL because the hazmat and CDL expiration dates will be the same. This change is being made due to confusion created among many drivers when the CDL expiration date increased to 8 years and no longer synchronizing with the 5-year hazmat expiration date required for a TSA Security Threat Assessment.
TSA background check and TWIC expiration reminder notifications will continue to be mailed to hazmat endorsement holders. All CDL applicants transferring a hazmat endorsement to Maryland from another jurisdiction will be issued a 5-year term CDL. CDL costs associated with this change are listed below.

CDL Conversion Out of State to Maryland CDL with the hazmat endorsement (5-year license) – $45
CDL Conversion Out of State to Maryland CDL without the hazmat endorsement (8-year license) – $72

If a driver adds a hazmat endorsement to a current 8-year CDL, the corrected CDL cost will be prorated.
8 years left on original 8 year – $12
7 years left on original 8 year – $18
6 years left on original 8 year – $24
5 years or less left on original 8 year – $30
